Bird Safe Mural at Carleton University

A group of students and faculty professors from The Carleton Conservation Collective reached out to ask if I would paint a mural for two glass walkways at Carleton University to prevent birds from colliding against the windows. They accepted my sketches and coordinated a group of volunteers to paint for a week, just before the bird migration began.

Once finished the mural we were interviewed by CBC, CTV News and Latin American program by Rogers TV. Here are the three links to see the interviews.

The Conversation

Event at the Studio of the Ottawa Art Gallery, September 2023

The Conversation was a day long opportunity to share, reflect, create, and learn together about our fears, biases and tools to overcome them. The facilitator Nadia Chaney offered different individual and group activities with immense creativity and fun. The artist Marisa Gallemit spoke about her creative process and the systems she uses. The group shared lunch at the terrace of the OAG catered by Petit Kiwi.

Bird-Safe Award

Bird-Safe is an organization made of professors and students at Ottawa University who want to put in place best practices to save birds. They made a call for artists to submit a design for a glass corridor of the Engineering Department. My design was selected and I drew it on 18 panels of the corridor.

City of Ottawa Seed Grant

In June 2022 Maria Gomez-Umaña and Lori Victor were awarded the Seed Grant from the Equity and Inclusion in the Arts Fund for their project Our Shared Spaces. The project is a woven metaphor about the search for identity by two women artists living and working in Ottawa. It is an experiential collaboration between two artists who want to learn from each other. We are interested in making a work of art based on our diverse histories and backgrounds, and our commonality of living in Ottawa.
